Reminder - Liquid Formulas Can Be Damaged By Freezing

We are not shipping microbial liquids (Clear-Flo, Enz-Odor, Treat-A-Loo) until the temperature warms sufficiently to avoid damage from freezing, unless you order a temperature controlled shipping container. Alken Citrus Degreaser 872 also cannot be shipped when freezing is a possibility.

Waste Treatment Bench Test Procedures

These kits are designed for scientific analysis of the feasibility of treating a difficult or toxic waste stream. To properly use our bench analysis test kits, you must have your own moderately equipped laboratory, your client must have a laboratory or you must have access to a laboratory. Test results are usually available in a few days. These kits are not a magic show, providing instantly visible results for novices. Distributors: please consider your client's technical capabilities before requesting these free kits. As a general guideline, the following industries can use the kit: most municipal or industrial waste treatment plants, hospitals, municipal or wildlife associations in charge of lake/river/wetlands remediation projects, and sophisticated aquaculture facilities. Clients who can not use the kits: golf courses, country clubs, homeowner's associations, small farmers, private homeowners, etc. The kit includes: the written test protocol, a list of required laboratory equipment, a gauze sponge, a bottle of phosphate buffer solution, and a 2 oz. sample of dry product (or 8 oz. of liquid). Depending on the application, we may also include a 2 oz. sample of Bionutrient 3.

Bench Scale Analysis Procedures to test Ammonia Nitrification

With this laboratory scale test, you can prove whether our CF 1100 and 7110 can perform nitrification in a particular waste stream. This test is especially useful if a particular waste stream is known (or suspected) to contain inhibitory elements, such as with BOD/COD higher than 200 ppm, low oxygen, low pH, etc. You may also use this test to compare CF 1100 or 7110 with competing products. Either an 8 oz. sample of CF 1100/7110 (10 mg/Liter/hour ammonia oxidation rate), or a 2 oz. sample of our 50x "refrigerate only" concentrate (500 mg/Liter/hour ammonia oxidation rate) is supplied along with detailed instructions for the procedure. This test can also be used for CF 1200 (oxidation rate of 6 mg/L/hr) and 1400 (oxidation rate of 8 mg/L/hr), but dosage must be adjusted for the lower quantities of pure nitrifiers. The kit includes: the written protocol, a list of required laboratory equipment, a gauze sponge, and a sample of the appropriate nitrification formula.

Definition of "CFU"

Viable micro-organisms (bacteria, yeasts & mould) capable of growth under the prescribed conditions (medium, atmosphere, time and temperature) develop into visible colonies (colony forming units) which are counted. The term colony forming unit (CFU) is used because a colony may result from a single micro-organism or from a clump / cluster of micro-organisms.

Oxymoron - Antibacterial AND Biodegradable

If a product is effectively antibacterial it should NOT claim to also be biodegradable. Bacteria are the "bio" in biodegradable. If you invite corpses to your dinner party, don't expect them to eat much! This is an Alken-Murray "pet peeve".

Nitrification versus Denitrification

Nitrifiers oxidize ammonia to nitrite and nitrite to nitrate under aerobic (with free oxygen) conditions. Denitrifiers utilize nitrate under anaerobic (no free oxygen) conditions, taking nitrate to nitrogen gas and free oxygen. Many denitrifiers are obligate anaerobes and may even be killed in the presence of oxygen. More useful are the facultative anaerobes, which can function both with and without oxygen. Applied under anaerobic conditions, Alken-Murray's strains capable of denitrification include: Nitrosomonas europaea, Bacillus subtilis, and Bacillus licheniformis. These strains require a minimum C/N ratio for of 6/1 (8/1 is ideal) for denitrification to occur. Our Thiobacillus denitrificans (in ALKEN ENZ-ODOR 6) is capable of denitrifying even in the presence of oxygen, as it prefers nitrate, and does not require an organic carbon source, although a sulfur source is required. As a side effect of denitrification with Enz-Odor 6 , any hydrogen sulfide present will also be removed.
