Nobody Found the Hidden Link to the "Out-of-Place" Pink Elephant for a 10% Discount

OK, hint #2 - a character in a famous movie, with the same name, recited this line "There is no place like home!" while clicking the heels of her ruby slippers. If you can't find her any other way, enter this character's name in our search engine. Remember - the first person to find her, gets 10% extra discount on their NEXT order!

Bulletin Board Flopped, so Now We Have a "Guest Book"

Sign in if you like, let us know what you think of our Website. If nobody comments in the next month, I will remove it too. We are just experimenting with communication media, but it seems that you prefer e-mail communication.

Remember the Website Search Engine!

Since your editor has a habit of changing things around on the Alken-Murray Website (we would not want anyone to get bored), please remember to try the search engine to find anything. If that fails, e-mail Valerie and ask for the address of the file. (Except, don't bother asking for the location of the pink elephant. You have to find her yourself!)

Alken Clear-Flo® Technical Updates

Major Warning of The Season

Do not backwash your swimming pool full of chlorine into your lake/pond!! You will end up making Alken-Murray rich by having to reseed your pond with bacteria over and over. Chlorine is one of the most potent BIOCIDES in existence. Even Alken-Murray's powerful bacteria cannot stand up to it.

Escherichia hermannii Removed from Some Alken Clear-Flo® Products

We have replaced E. hermannii, our obligate aerobic strain of hydrogen sulfide degrader, with P. putida 479, since E. hermannii was not as stable.

Product Upgrades -Minor

The following products have minor upgrades to their strain combinations: CF 1200, 4000, 4100, 4003, 4103, 7000, 7100, 7015 and Enz-Odor 2 & 5. The new strains are substitutes for less stable ones, so shelf-life should improve. Distributors who have signed confidentiality agreements may request updated information.

Product Upgrade - Major

We have totally redesigned Alken Clear-Flo® 7002 and 7004, utilizing some exciting new strains. Distributors who have signed confidentiality agreements may request updated information.

So, You Think Someone Illegally Dumped Crude Oil in Your Pond!

There is always a small possibility that you are correct. On the other hand, there is a very interesting strain of algae, known as Botryococcus braunii, a chlorophyte order of Chlorococcales. This strain produces C34 hydrocarbons with characteristics similar to crude petroleum. When it blooms, this alga appears as a slimy bright green scum on the surface of the water. This species became extensive in one of the Central Park water bodies in 1992, following a severe thunderstorm, which disturbed nutrients buried in the sediment and brought large quantities of storm-water run off into the water bodies. The hydrocarbon degrading strains in CF 1001 therefore prove to be protective of the water quality when this species is present.

Central Park Algae Control Study Report Updated

A freshly edited copy of the Central Park Algae Control Study Report, including comparisons between doses actually used in 1992 and doses that would be prescribed in 1999, with improved formulations is now available. The new program would cost less than 35% of the old program, which is a savings of more than 60%! Contact us for your copy of the updated report today.

SUPER SALE!! Alken Clear-Flo® 7004 & 7002

We have a single 25 lb. pail of each formula left that were made before we reformulated these two products. These pails are available at a 60% DISCOUNT!! The count is good, the performance is good (not as good as the new formula, obviously) and it still has one year of full-count shelf-life remaining, then another year after that with reduced count. If you need detergents or phenol degraded, this is your lucky day!

Alken Clear-Flo® Competitor Comparisons

BACTA-PUR™ - (prices and dosages listed on Website of Aquatic Eco-Systems, Inc.)

Bacta-Pur™ requires a grow-out tank, just like Probiotics and a few others, but they have not figured out how to stabilize a formula with nutrients IN it, so the preparation is both time-consuming and complicated. Although these products claim to contain a count of 100 billion CFU/ml, the dosages required make this seem highly unlikely, unless of course they are simply the wrong strains for the job or a large percentage do not reactivate. To best compare their system with Alken Clear-Flo®, we will pretend to treat a 34,000 gallon pond, which is 4 times what they consider large, and Alken-Murray classifies as tiny.

The directions given for applying Bacta-Pur™ products to A "Large Pond" - INITIAL TREATMENT: For every 8,500 gallons, mix 34 oz of Bacta-Pur™ XLG with 1 pouch of Accelerator and 1 pouch of Bacta-Pur™ Nutrients with 5 gallons of system water and aerate for 24 hours at 86 degrees F. Then add 34 oz. Bacta-Pur™ N3000 + 2.2 lbs. of Carrier (ground oyster shells to "soak up" the bacteria). Stir and aerate for 30 minutes. Then spray or add to aeration mixing points.

For 34,000 gallons, you need 4 liters of BP XLG for $33.30 + 4 pouches of BP Nutrients for $75.40 + 4 pouches of BP Accelerator for $75.40 + 4 liters of BP N3000 for $33.40 + 9 lbs. BP Carrier for $12.36 (prorated out of 55 lb. drum). Total cost of INITIAL treatment is $229.76. Bacta-Pur then prescribes a DAILY follow-up for 3 weeks with 2 liters of BP N3000 ($13.25)+ 2 pouches of BP Nutrients ($37.70) + 4.4 lbs. of BP Carrier ($6.18) = $57.13 x 7 =$399.91 per week x 3 = $1,199.73 + 229.76 = $1,429.49 for the first month to treat 34,000 gallons of pond water.

MAINTENANCE = $114.26 per week thereafter. Total cost for 5 months of treatment = $3,257.65

COMPARE WITH:

Alken Clear-Flo® 1200 - First, follow our dosage charts to obtain the right dosage. Then mix 1 oz of dry custom-prescribed supplement (included at no charge) with each gallon of liquid product and 1 gallon of pond water. Allow to hydrate for anywhere from 30 minutes to a couple of hours. Strain off the bran if you wish to apply by spray application, or just dump the pail of mixed treatment into your pond, preferably at aeration points. You cannot go wrong, as this product and its supplement can work ALONE, straight out of the pail. The supplement works better with pre-acclimation, but both products perform creditably without it. For 34,000 gallons of water, apply 16 oz of liquid for the initial application. Once a week for three weeks, apply 8 oz of liquid. Maintenance requires 4 oz per week, unless there is an exceptional influent from a severe storm, or severe runoff or someone back washes a swimming pool into the pond. 1 x 5 gallon pail will be more than adequate to treat 34,000 gallons for more than 5 months, even if high phosphate levels require double the dosage.

Conclusion: Bacta-Pur's Treatment for five months is more than 23 TIMES as expensive as Alken Clear-Flo 1200 and significantly more complicated and time consuming to apply. The treatment cost differential is even higher when truly large water bodies (above 40 acre-ft) are considered because Alken-Murray can offer other treatment options and quantity discounts to augment the increased efficiency of application to larger water bodies, which usually have lower flow-through than the smaller applications. Of course, when you consider the value of your time, the extra hassle preparing the Bacta-Pur™ increases the cost. Some people may be fooled by the CLAIM of high count and believe that a complicated procedure means the product is "more professional", but we hope that people will compare the TOTAL cost of a treatment program, and the results obtained.

Alken® Fuel Treatments - Technical Updates

Alken 944 Dosage Mistake on Product Information Bulletin

The dosage listing of 3.13 to 5.21 gallons per 1,000 gallons was an incorrect interpretation of 0.3 -0.5 lbs. per 1000 gallons. The correct number of gallons per 1,000 gallons is 0.0313 to 0.0521 gallons.
