3. Hazards Identification

Emergency Overview: WARNING: Dangerous if ingested. Eye and skin irritant

Potential Health Effects:

  • Signs and Symptoms of Acute Overexposure: May cause mild skin irritation. May cause irritation of the eyes, nose, throat and digestive tract, headaches, coughing, nausea, diarrhea, and transietn disorientation.
  • Signs and Symptoms of Chronic overexposure: Prolonged skin contact my cause moderate irritation, although no harmful effects from skin absorption have been reported.
  • Medical Conditions Generally Aggravated by Exposure: Sensitive skin. Pre-existing heart disease may be aggravated by exposure to nitrates.
  • Other Comments: This product contains nitrate salts. Nitrates may be reduced by intestinal bacteria to nitrites. When absorbed, nitrites may result in effects on the blood (methemoglobinemia) and blood vessels (vasodilating and a fall in blood pressure). Symptoms of toxicity may include headache, fainting, fatigue, cyanosis, confusion, irregular heartbeats, and possible respiratory paralysis.

4. First Aid Measures

  • Inhalation: If respiratory symptoms develop, move patient away from source of exposure and into fresh air. If symptoms persist, seek medical attention. If patient is not breathing, clear airway and immediately begin artificial respiration. Oxygen may be administered if breathing difficulties develop.
  • Ingestion: If swallowed, seek emergency medical attention. If patient is drowsy or unconscious and vomiting, place on left side with the head down and do not give anything by mouth. If patient is conscious and alert and ingestion occured within the last hour, induce vomiting, preferably under supervision of physician or poison control. If possible, do not leave patient unattended. Observe closely for adequate breathing.
  • Skin Contact: Remove contaminated clothing. Wash skin thoroughly with soap and water. Wash clothing before reuse. If irritation develops and persists, seek medical attention.
  • Eye Contact: Immediately flush eyes with water for 15 minutes. If irritation persists, seek medical attention.
  • Note to Physician: Nitrates in large doses may cause dignificant vasodilation and hypotension. Pre-existing ischemic heart disease may be aggravated by these effects. In large ingestions, nitrates may cause methemoglobinemia. Methemoglobinemia should be suspected if cyanosis occurs. Methylene blue (1-2 mg/kg I.V, over several minutes) is an effective antidote for symptomatic Methemoglovinemia.

5. Fire Fighting Measures

Flash Point: NONE by Pensky-Martens Closed Cup method, ASTM D-93

Flammability Limits: NONE

Fire Extinguishing Media: Water or suitable extinguishing media for surrounding fire

Special Fire-Fighting Information: Use water spray to cool containers. Nitrate salts can support combustion under certain conditions. Do not allow product to evaporate to dryness. For fires beyond the incipient stage, emergency responders in the immediate hazard area should wear bunker gear. When the potential chemical hazard is unknown, in enclosed or confined spaces, or when explicitly required by DOT, a NIOSH approved, self-contained breathing apparatus should be worn. In addition, wear other appropriate protective equipment as conditions warrant. Move undamaged containers from immediate hazard area, if it can be done with minimal risk.

Unusual Fire and Explosion Hazards: When the potential chemical hazard is unknown, in enclosed or confined spaces, or when explicityly required, an SCBA (self-contained breathing apparatus) should be worn. In addition, wear other appropriate protective equipment as conditions warrant. if in fire situation. Thermal decomposition may produce minute quantities of oxides of carbon, nitrogen and ammonia.. Closed containers exposed to extreme heat can rupture due to pressure buildup.

6. Accidental Release Measures

Stop spill/release, if this can be accomplished with a minimum risk. Isolate immediate hazard are and keep unauthorized personnel out. Wear appropriate protective equipment, including respiratory protection (NIOSH-SCBA), as conditions warrant. Dike and contain spilled product. Product is fully water-soluble and will disperse in water. Prevent spilled product from entering storm drains, wells, natural waterways and sources of potable water. Recover as much product as possible. Spilled product may be pumped into suitable containers for future use or else absorbed into suitable absorbent material. Since product stimulates the activity of bacteria with pollution and waste bioremediation capabilities, discharge to sanitary sewers.

7. Handling and Storage

Use and store this product in cool, dry, well-ventilated area. Keep container closed when not in use. Avoid storage of product > 110 degrees F (> 43 degrees C) and keep from freezing. Heating above 140 degrees F (> 60 degrees C) will promote hydrolysis. Extreme cold < 35 F (< 1.7 degrees C) will cause crystallization of organic and inorganic salts in product. Restore by mixing with hot water. Avoid contact with skin and eyes. DO NOT breathe mists. The use of appropriate respiratory protection (NIOSH-approved SCBA) is advised if full strength product is accidentally misted into the air. Product is hygroscopic, absorbing water from the air. Always wash hands with soap and water before handling food or smoking. Use good hygiene practices when working with any chemical mixture. Do not wear contaminated clothing or shoes. KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN.

8. Exposure Controls/ Personal Protection

  • Ventilation System: Good general ventilation is advisable
  • Personal Respirators (NIOSH Approved): None require for normal use. Use if fire is present.
  • Skin Protection: Long sleeved clothing and latex or neoprene gloves. If handling large quantities of product, wear impervious clothing or lab coat.
  • Eye Protection: Chemical safety goggles or face shield if applied indoors
  • Other Control Measures: Eye wash station advised. A source of clean water should be available in the work area for flushing eyes and skin.
ACGIH: 10 mg/M3 for nuisance mists is suggested for this product. NOTE: State, local or other agencies may have established more stringent limits, based on ingredients identified in section 2, above. Consult an industrial hygienist or similar professional, or your local agencies, for further information.
