3. Hazards Identification

Emergency Overview: WARNING: Harmful if Inhaled; Causes Respiratory tract irritation; harmful if absorbed through skin; may cause chronic health effects based on data with laboratory animals.

Potential Health Effects:

-ACUTE EXPOSURE-

Ingestion: Based on data from components or similar materials,. Swallowing material may cause irritation of the gastrointestinal lining, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain.
Eye Irritation:
Weak to moderate eye irritation. Based on data from components or similar material. Does not meet the Canadian D2B or EU R36 criteria, based on data from components and similar materials.
Skin Irritation:
May cause skin irritation. Based on data from components or similar materials. Prolonged or repeated skin contact as from clothing wet with material may cause dermatitis. Symptoms may include redness, edema, drying, and cracking of skin. Skin absorption of components of this material may cause systematic effects; note toxicity form other sections.
Inhalation:
Not expected to be a toxic inhalation hazard. Based on data available from components and similar materials. High concentrations may cause headaches, dizziness, nausea, stupor and other central nervous system effects leasing to visual impairment, difficulty breathing and convulsions.
Sensitization:
NDA for skin or inhalation.

-CHRONIC EXPOSURE-

Chronic Toxicity:
Repeated overexposure to toluene may cause loss of appetite, liver enlargement, and kidney and lung damage. Repeated inhalation of hydrocarbon solvents such as toluene can cause chronic neurological disturbances.
Carcinogenicity:
NDA to indicate any components present at greater than 0.1% are mutagenic or genotoxic.
Tetratogenicity:
NDA to indicate any components present at greater than 0.1% are mutagenic or genotoxic.

4. First Aid Measures

  • Inhalation: Remove victim to fresh air. If breathing is impaired, administer oxygen. Keep patient warm and quiet. If breathing has stopped, administer artificial respiration. If irritation persists or if toxic symptoms are observed, get medical attention.
  • Ingestion: Do not induce vomiting. Give victim 2 glasses of water to drink to dilute the product. Aspiration of material due to vomiting can cause chemical pneumonitis which can be fatal. Get immediate medical attention. If vomiting occurs naturally, victim should lean forward to reduce the risk of asperation.
  • Skin Contact: Wash skin with soap and water. Remove contaminated clothing and launder before reuse. Get medical attention if irritation persists.
  • Eye Contact: Immediately flush eyes with water for 15 minutes. Get immediate medical attention.
  • Note to Physician: Treat symptomatically.

5. Fire Fighting Measures

Flash Point: 132 degrees C (269.6 degrees F) (PMCC (PMCC)

Flammability Limits: NA

Autoignition temp: NA

Fire Extinguishing Media: Water spray, dry chemical, carbon dioxide, foam

Special Fire-Fighting Information: Wear Wear NIOSH-approved SCNA. Water may cause splattering. Material will float on water. Use water spray to cool containers. Isolate product from fire.

Unusual Fire and Explosion Hazards: Toxic fumes, gases and vapors may evolve on burning. Vapors are heavier than air and may travel along the ground to a distant ignition source and flash back. Container may rupture on heating. .

6. Accidental Release Measures

Land Spill: Evacuate all non-essential personnel. Personal Protective Equipment must be worn, see Personal Protection Section for PPE recommendations. Prevent additional discharge of material, if possible to do so without hazard. Recover for use if possible, or transfer to suitable container for disposal. Use absorbent to clean up. Prevent liquid from entering sewers, water sources, or low areas. Contain spilled liquid with sand or earth. Wash down spill area with soap and water. Consult an expert on disposal of recovered material and ensure conformity to local disposal regulations.

Water Spill: Remove from surface by skimming or with suitable absorbents. If allowed by local authorities and environmental agencies, sinking and/or suitable dispersants may be used in confined waters. Recovered material may be biodegraded with Alken Clear-Flo® 7036, supplemented by Alken® Bio-Nutrient 3 and Alken Clear-Flor® 5100, if a suitable aerated, treatment tank is available on-site. Consult your Alken-Murray distributor for more information.

8. Exposure Controls/ Personal Protection

  • Ventilation System: Use local exhaust ventilation to control mists or vapors. Additional ventilation or exhaust may be required to maintain air concentrations below recommended exposure limits.
  • Personal Respirators (NIOSH Approved): Use NIOSH/MSHA approved full face respirator with a combination organic vapor and high efficiency filter cartridge if the recommended exposure limit is exceeded. Use self-contained breathing apparatus for entry into confined space, or for other poorly ventilated areas and for large spill clean-up sites.
  • Skin Protection: Long sleeved clothing and nitrile or neoprene gloves.
  • Eye Protection: Chemical safety goggles or face shield
  • Other Control Measures:
ACGIH: CAS#108-88-3 - 100 ppm STEL: 150 ppm; CAS# 8042-47-5 - 10 mg/m3; CAS 71-43-2 - 10 ppm
