 3. Hazards Identification

Emergency Overview: The microorganisms used in this product are BioSafety Class 1 microorganisms, as defined by the Centers for Disease Control as unlikely to cause disease in healthy humans or animals. However, persons with compromised immune systems should avoid contact with open wounds and/or breathing dust or mist from manufacturing processes. These organisms are susceptible to many commonly used antibiotics, and Alken-Murray is willing to supply antibiotic sensitivity information to any doctor or import health authority requesting it. Because surfactants are included, primary skin irritation under 29CFR 1910.1200 is considered possible, as is true of many shampoos that contain the same surfactants. Although bacterial cultures included in this product were grown in a sterile aqueous medium containing a variety of nutrients, including corn syrup solids, digests of soybean and/or skim milk, glucose or other sugars, vegetable oils, including olive oil, yeast extract, mineral salts, etc., the concentrations of these residual nutrients are believed to be below levels capable of triggering irritation.

Potential Health Effects:
  • Signs and Symptoms of Acute Overexposure: Eye, skin irritation
  • Signs and Symptoms of Chronic overexposure: Dermatitis and skin sensitization
  • Medical Conditions Generally Aggravated by Exposure: Allergies, dermatitis.
  • Ingestion: May result in abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting.

 4. First Aid Measures

  • Inhalation: Remove victim to fresh air
  • Ingestion: Give victim water or milk to drink to dilute the product. Get medical advice..
  • Skin Contact: Remove contaminated clothing and footwear. Wash skin with soap and water. Wash clothing before reuse.
  • Eye Contact: Immediately flush eyes with water for 15 minutes. Get medical attention.
  • Note to Physician: If patient's immune system is compromised, request antibiotic sensitivity chart from Alken-Murray Corporation by e-mail: msds@alken-murray.com or obtain from the internet at antibio-strain.pdf

12. Ecological Information

Environmental Fate: This product is not likely to bioconcentrate, if mixed with water. If product is released in high concentration to the environment, oxygen levels may temporarily decrease at the release site. Bacteria included in this product will degrade the other ingredients, further reducing environmental impact of the product.

Environmental Toxicity: This material has a low potential to affect aquatic organisms, secondary waste treatment microorganisms, and the growth of some plants.

Aquatic Ecotoxicity of Individual Ingredients: CAS# 2634-33-1, 1,2 benzisothiazolin-3-one (<1%) is VERY toxic to aquatic organisms (Fish, LC50, 4 days exposure = 1.0 - 3.3 ppm. Crustaceans (Daphnia magna) EC50 immobilization = 2 days exposure 0.85 ppm. ,CAS# 1300-72-7, Sodium xylene sulfonate (1 - 1.5%): Acute aquatic toxicity (rainbow trout)(static)(96 hr): LC50 est.= > 1000 mg/L (relatively harmless). Acute aquatic toxicity (D.magna)(static)(48 hr): EC50 est. = > 1000 mg/L (relatively harmless). Acute aquatic toxicity (freshwater algae)(static)(48 hr): EC50 = >230 mg/kg (practically non-toxic to algae). . CAS# 123-31-9, Hydroquinone (<0.1%): Rainbow Trout LC50 = 0.097 mg/L; 96H, Fathead Minnow LC50 = 0.1 - 0.18 mg/L, 96H.

Biodegradability: CAS# 2634-33-1 will biodegrade by 81.9% within 20 days. CAS# 68155-90-9 will biodegrade by 84% within 28 days, based on readings of DOUR (dissolved oxygen uptake rate). All three coconut-based surfactants are easily biodegraded, when tested using OECD protocol. Although present as a trace amount, the naturally high BOD of this chemical will shorten bioremediation time needed, as it binds with soil and humified compounds with natural negative charges. Hydroquinone, CAS# 123-31-9, will biodegrade within 28 days, in conjunction with the balance of this product. For further details on OECD protocol, see "OECD Guidelines for Testing Chemicals", 1981, ISBN 92-64-12221-

13. Disposal Considerations

RCRA Hazard Class (if discarded): .Neat, unused product is not considered a hazardous waste, according to RCRA regulations 40 CFR 261. . For proper disposal of used materials, an assessment must be completed to determine the proper waste management options permissible under applicable rules, regulations and/or laws governing client's location. Use until less than 1 inch remains in the container. Disinfect container with a 1% sodium hypochlorite solution, triple rinse with clean water, and pour rinse water to sewer. Then remove or deface product label to avoid confusion if pail or drum is later refilled. Clean, empty containers should be recycled or disposed of through an approved waste management facility.

14. Transportation Information

  • DOT Proper Shipping Name: Not regulated as hazardous by DOT
  • DOT Hazard Class: None
