3. Hazards Identification

Emergency Overview: WARNING: Strong oxidizer. Contact with other material may cause afire. Hygroscopic. May be harmful if swallowed. May cause methemoglobinemia. May cause eye and skin irritation. May causerespiratory and digestive tract irritation. Target Organs: Blood.

Potential Health Effects:

  • Signs and Symptoms of Acute Overexposure: Severe eye and skin irritation and possible burns, possible permanent injury. May cause methemoglobinemia, cyanosis, convulsions, and death. Methemoglobinemia is characterized by dizziness, drowsiness, headache, breath shortness, cyanosis with bluish skin, rapid heart rate and chocolate-brown colored blood. May be harmful if swallowed. Ingestion may produce eye disturbances, deafness, speechlessness, and tetanic convulsions.
  • Signs and Symptoms of Chronic overexposure: Dermatitis and skin sensitization
  • Medical Conditions Generally Aggravated by Exposure: Allergies, dermatitis.
  • Other Comments: This product contains nitrate salts. Nitrates may be reduced by intestinal bacteria to nitrite. When absorbed, nitrites may result in effects on the blood (methemoglobinemia) and blood vessels (vasodilating and a fall in blood pressure.

12. Ecological Information

Environmental Fate: This product is not likely to bioconcentrate, if mixed with water. If product is released in high concentration to the environment, oxygen levels may temporarily decrease at the release site. If a spill is impossible to avoid, contact Alken-Murray for appropriate selection of bioremediation treatment, which will normally consist of Alken Clear-Flo® 1006 &/oe Alken Clear-Flo®  1005.

Environmental Toxicity: CAS# 7631-99-4, Sodium nitrate will not cause oxygen depletion in aquatic systems. It has a low potential to affect aquatic organisms, secondary waste treatment microorganisms, and the growth of some plants. 13. Disposal Considerations

 RCRA Hazard Class (if discarded): Neat, unused product is not considered a hazardous waste, according to RCRA regulations 40 CFR 261. For proper disposal of used materials, an assessment must be completed to determine the proper waste management options permissible under applicable rules, regulations and/or laws governing client's location. Use until less than 1 inch remains in the container, triple rinse with clean water, and pour rinse water to sewer. Then remove or deface product label to avoid confusion if pail or drum is later refilled. Clean, empty containers should be recycled or disposed of through an approved waste management facility.
