Alken-Murray will recommend that a bench-scale analysis, also known as a bench test, be performed with both products, if there is a question which is most suitable for a particular application. An additional procedure for inhibition testing can be performed if an inhibitor, such as heavy metal, is suspected of being present in the target waste. Together, these tests will allow a treatability prediction to be made.

INITIAL LAND FARMING RECIPE - for each 1 lb of CF 7036, CF 7037 & CF 7038 prescribed: Stir 1 lb of whichever powdered product was selected by bench scale analysis into 2 gallons of unchlorinated water. Allow the mixture to rest overnight (12 to 24 hours) with aeration (to activate the bacteria and increase its concentration by at least one log of growth) before applying. Add the prescribed dose of Bio-Nutrient 4, just before application. For maximum coverage, the liquid mass, referred to as a supernatant, should be applied with a sprayer, with a special nozzle which allows the watery mixture (including bran) to pass through.

Large areas should be sprayed with tanker trucks or by low flying helicopters or planes. Approximate mixing ratios would be 50 lbs. Alken Clear-Flo® 7036,, 7037 or 7038 , 8 lbs. Alken® Bio-Nutrient 4 and 5 gallons of Alken Clear-Flo 5100 in 5000 gallons of water. Mix thoroughly and hydrate overnight with aeration (to increase concentration) and spray over a large area. Coverage will depend on ability of the operator to spread the mixture evenly on the total area.

Heavier hydrocarbon contamination should be treated with a more concentrated mixture, up to double the initial dosage suggestion. These areas should first be tilled, when possible, to provide adequate aeration. Areas must be kept moist, and should be covered with alfalfa hay or other shading materials, which allow oxygen to permeate the soil. Till and reinoculate with dry or liquid cultures and surfactant-containing liquid, once per week (more often in case of a severe contamination) until a sufficient biomass is created to decrease inoculation to once a month, while tilling at least once a week. Check levels of nitrogen and phosphorus during treatment, and only add more Bio-Nutrient 4, if required. Recirculating the leachate through the system shown in our diagrams allows for a reduction of the total dosage of products, after the first application, to approximately 50% of the prescription without such a system.

Bio-remediation may take from a few weeks to several months or longer if the area is badly contaminated. Soil analyses should be conducted periodically to evaluate the treatment program requirements.
