3. Hazards Identification

Emergency Overview: The microorganisms used in this product are BioSafety Class 1 microorganisms, as defined by the Centers for Disease Control as unlikely to cause disease in healthy humans or animals. However, persons with compromised immune systems should avoid contact with open wounds and/or breathing dust or mist from manufacturing processes. These organisms are susceptible to many commonly used antibiotics, and Alken-Murray is willing to supply antibiotic sensitivity information to any doctor or import health authority requesting it. See posted sensitivity index at antibio-strain.pdf Although bacterial cultures included in this product were grown in a sterile aqueous medium containing a variety of nutrients, including corn syrup solids, digests of soybean and/or skim milk, glucose or other sugars, vegetable oils, including olive oil, yeast extract, mineral salts, etc., the concentrations of these residual nutrients are believed to be below levels capable of triggering irritation.

Potential Health Effects:

  • Signs and Symptoms of Acute Overexposure: Eye, skin irritation
  • Signs and Symptoms of Chronic overexposure: Dermatitis and skin sensitization
  • Medical Conditions Generally Aggravated by Exposure: Allergies, dermatitis.
  • Ingestion: May result in abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting. Irritation of the mouth, pharynx, esophagus and stomach can develop following ingestion.

4. First Aid Measures

  • Inhalation: Remove victim to fresh air
  • Ingestion: Give victim water or milk to drink to dilute the product. Get medical advice..
  • Skin Contact: Remove contaminated clothing and footwear. Wash skin with soap and water. Wash clothing before reuse.
  • Eye Contact: Immediately flush eyes with water for 15 minutes. Get medical attention.
  • Note to Physician: If patient's immune system is compromised, see posted "antibiotic sensitivity chart, by strain" posted as a PDF file in the Safety Frame. The Kirby-Bauer method used to obtain our "by strain" results complies with current medical protocols. Normally, we would advise clients to ignore our old "whole product tests", also posted to the internet, but since each INDIVIDUAL strain in Alken Enz-Odor 9 produced a "sensitive" result to the Gentamicin antibiotic, this should be the first antibiotic applied, if a doctor or health authority deems it suitable to kill this product.
