 5. Are the bacteria and fungi in Alken Clear-Flo®, Enz-Odor®, Treat-A-Loo and Nu-Bind safe?
Alken-Murray uses Biosafety Class 1, non-pathogenic (are not a cause of disease) to humans, animals and plants. All Alken-Murray microbial products are
certified Salmonella and Shigella-free. Some products are also tested for E.coli and Streptococcus. Alken Clear-Flo® 1000 line products cause no short or long-term detrimental ecological effects. In fact, by reducing total suspended solids (TSS), ammonia salts, hydrogen sulfide, and other contaminants in your lake, pond or reservoir, Alken Clear-Flo® contributes better water quality.

All Alken Clear-Flo® 1000 line products are safe for use in any aquatic environment, for use around fish, crustaceans (lobsters, shrimps, prawns, etc.), animals, frogs, alligators, worms, Artemia and protozoa. The Alken Clear-Flo® 1000 line products are used to restore a natural BALANCE to the aquatic environment. A naturally balanced aquatic environment must maintain a small amount of algae and micro-algae to feed certain protozoa and the young of some larger species, and are themselves feed for larger species of fish. An unbalanced system will have huge overgrowths of algae that eventually die suddenly in what is termed an "algal crash", killing many other species when this happens. Alken Clear-Flo® 1000 line products will also improve the immune systems of fish and crustaceans, helping them to better fend off disease, so the entire system becomes healthier. Specific formulas are designed to solve specific problems in the system.

The combined safety and effectiveness of Alken Clear-Flo® 1000 line products has led to their selection by a number of government agencies for the clean-up of public water bodies. A few specific products used for aquatic remediation or aquaculture have had specific independent toxicity tests, to verify safety of the product. You can find this information in section 11 of the specific MSDS sheet.

Specific products marked with the "no fish" symbol on our master product indexes, from the CF 4000, 5000, 7000, Enz-Odor, Treat-A-Loo and Nu-Bind lines, contain surfactants which are NOT safe for use around fish, but the bacteria and fungi in those products ARE safe for use anywhere.

6. Are Alken Clear-Flo 1000 line products safe for fish?
YES! Alken Clear-Flo® 1000 line products improve the aquatic environment for fish and other wildlife by removing ammonia and sludge from the water column. Alken Clear-Flo® formulas have been used in 45 states and 38 countries for a variety of aquaculture and remediation conditions. Various Alken Clear-Flo® products have been authorized for use by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) for specific applications. It has also been used by Marineland of Florida and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

7. If these bacteria and fungi are already present in nature, why do they have to be added to a natural system?
The bacteria and fungi in nature are kept in check by organisms in the food chain that eat them and are not always suited to the kind of wastes in which they find themselves. In the case of a tough pollutant such as cyanide, the natural bacteria may not be accustomed to using it as a food source. By flooding the system with a carefully selected and enhanced combination of organisms, the added bacteria have an enormous competitive advantage, and are free and able to handle the wastes at a given site.
8. If the special bacteria in Alken Clear-Flo® reproduce in the field, why isn't one dose sufficient?
Fresh from the pail, each strain of Alken Clear-Flo® bacteria has been specially adapted to prefer specific difficult-to-degrade wastes. After adapting the strains to a specific purpose, Alken-Murray blends the strains in a particular formula to suit the intended task. Without Alken-Murray's artificial selection process, each succeeding generation (after the first 10) reverts more and more toward the "wild", again, preferring simpler carbon sources, such as sugars, found in the waste stream. In other words, after "breeding" in a waste stream with a low concentration of the target substance, for 10 or more generations, the descendants of Alken Clear-Flo® become more and more indistinguishable from the wild population. Of course, if the waste stream is highly concentrated with the target substance, and the waste flow is fairly constant, the maintenance dose can be cut back until it is miniscule. A few competitors claim that their products are also selectively adapted and that their strains do not revert, no matter what. Those same competitors fail to mention the fact that their strains are too WEAK to survive for enough generations for any reversion to occur!
